2013 Indonesia, Bali, Ubud, Lewak Coffee
The next day we woke a bit earlier because the lady host at the homestay wanted to take us to see a small coffee production place on the road up to Katini on top of mount?
It was a small family operation, although it seemed quite a lot of tourists go there.
From the entrance you walk through a garden/orchard area with coffee plants and numerous other crop plants which was interesting. We then came to a cage in which was a 'luwak' which a mongoose like creature with a nice black and grey coat. It had a large bowl of coffee fruits to eat, and dotted around the cage floor where its feces that were more or less the coffee bean, still with the husk around it.
This is then collected, washed, dried and de-husked, then roasted and finally pounded in a large pestle to a find ground.
This is the very famous and expensive husk coffee that people pay so much for.
We progressed to a beautiful seating area overlooking the lush valley and we were given a large range of coffee and other teas to tast. There was luwak, normal coffee, vanilla made with fresh vanilla beacns, ginger, cocoa and some others I can't recall.
All were very nice, but for me the Lewak was special, while Ellie loved the vanilla and had a couple of refills!
